Phoenix left with too much to do despite improved display

Despite an improved display, Phoenix Sports suffered a 3-1 defeat to Herne Bay on Saturday.

There were promising signs from the new-look Phoenix side, who created several chances, hitting the woodwork twice and caused Herne Bay plenty of problems at the Christopher Russell Ground.

Herne Bay opened the scoring in the 26th minute with a swift counterattack. Scott Heard delivered a well-timed cross, allowing Kane Haysman to finish clinically, putting the visitors 1-0 up.

Moments later, Herne Bay doubled their lead. Goalkeeper Harry Brooks launched a long, looping kick over the Phoenix defence, finding Ethan Smith, who side-footed past debutant Phoenix keeper Taite Holtam to make it 2-0.

A minute before the hour mark, Herne Bay appeared to seal the result when they were awarded a penalty after a foul by Harvey Browne. Michael Salako confidently converted from the spot, giving the visitors a 3-0 advantage, which somewhat flattered them.

However, Phoenix refused to give in and came close on several occasions, with two corners striking the woodwork, and Richard Pingling seeing a shot well saved.

In the closing stages of the match, Phoenix finally got a reward for their persistence. Pingling delivered a well-placed cross to substitute Marcus Elliott, who took a touch and slotted home past Brooks.

Unfortunately for Phoenix, it wasn’t enough to change the outcome, as Herne Bay held on for the victory.

Next up for Phoenix is a visit from title favourites Ramsgate on Tuesday night, who have seven wins from seven league games so far this season.
